One of the most important areas to keep clean is in between the teeth. Your brush wont reach these areas alone and it is easy for bacteria to grow in these small spaces and cause inflammation and problems with your teeth and gums. Below is a short explaination regarding flossing technique to help you understand exactly what we are trying to achieve :-
1. Tear off a lenghty stretch of floss (around 30cm) and wrap each end around your index or middle fingers.
2. To clean the upper jaw, push the floss in between the teeth gently with your thumbs to go through the contact point(where the teeth naturally meet together)
3. Wrap the floss around the side of each tooth in a U shape and follow the contour of the tooth so as not to damage the gum. Gently move the floss up and down applying slight pressure.
4. Move your index fingers along the lenght of floss so as you are taking a new stretch of floss between each tooth.
5. Reapeat steps 1. to 4. for the lower jaw.
If the spaces between your teeth are too large for floss there are also miniature brushes called interdental brushes which may be more suitable. There are a range of sizes and one of our hygienists will help you choose the most appropriate one for you.
The brush should fit snuggly in between the space with the bristles applying gently pressure on the tissues but not so much they will cause damage. You should insert the brush from the outside or inside and move it back and forth before cleaning under the tap. You should change this little brush at least every 2 weeks.
We have recently invested in an air polisher for our hygienists to ensure our patients receive the best in in surgery implant implant care and cleaning. The hygienists will also explain to you how best to look after your implants and include them in part of your daily cleaning routine.
The Airflow Perio eliminates biofilm and gently cleans implants, reducing discomfort and sensitivity to the patient. For more information on our new service, visit www.optident.co.uk
