If you’re wondering whether dental bonding can fix discoloured teeth, you’re in the right place. The answer is a resounding yes! Dental bonding is a standard procedure used for many cosmetic issues, including teeth discolouration.

reasons for teeth decolourationReasons for Having Discoloured Teeth

Teeth discolouration is a common issue that many people face. It can be due to a variety of reasons, and understanding these can help you take steps towards a brighter smile. Here are some main causes of teeth discolouration:

Food and Drink – Certain foods and drinks are known to stain teeth. These include coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-coloured fruits and vegetables like berries and beetroot. These items have intense colour pigments called chromogens that attach to the white, outer part of your tooth, leading to staining.

Tobacco Use – If you’re a smoker or use tobacco products, you’re more likely to have stained teeth. This is because tobacco contains two harmful chemicals, tar and nicotine, that create stubborn stains. Tar is naturally dark, while nicotine is colourless until it’s mixed with oxygen, then it turns into a yellowish, surface-staining substance.

Poor Dental Hygiene – Inadequate brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash can lead to teeth discolouration. These habits prevent the removal of stain-producing substances and plaque, leading to a duller smile.

Age – As you age, the outer enamel on your teeth gets thinner with brushing and more of the yellowish dentin beneath shows through. This can make your teeth appear discoloured or yellowish over time.

Trauma or Illness – If you’ve been hit in the mouth, your tooth may change colour as it reacts to an injury by laying down more dentin, which is a darker layer under the enamel. Certain illnesses and treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation to the head and neck, can also cause teeth discolouration.

Medications – Certain medications, like certain types of antihistamines, antipsychotics, and high blood pressure medications, can lead to teeth discolouration. Young children who are exposed to antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline while their teeth are forming (either in the womb or as a baby) may have discolouration of their adult teeth later in life.

Genetics – Genetics can play a role too. Some people naturally have thicker or brighter enamel than others.

Why Choose Composite Bonding for Teeth Decolouration?

Composite bonding is a popular choice for fixing teeth decolouration because it’s:

  • Versatile: It can correct a variety of dental issues, including decolouration, chips, gaps, and even making teeth look longer.
  • Minimally invasive: Unlike veneers and crowns, composite bonding doesn’t require extensive drilling or enamel removal.
  • Quick: The procedure usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes per tooth, and can often be done in a single visit.
  • Cost-effective: Composite bonding is typically less expensive than other cosmetic dental procedures.
  • Customisable: The resin can be shaped and coloured to match your natural teeth, giving you a personalised, natural-looking smile.

Composite bonding is a particularly effective solution for discoloured teeth. Here’s how it works:

  1. Preparation: First, our dentist will select a composite resin colour that closely matches the natural colour of your teeth. This ensures that the bonding will blend in seamlessly with your existing teeth.
  2. Bonding: The surface of your tooth will be slightly roughened and a conditioning liquid applied. This helps the bonding material adhere to your tooth. The tooth-coloured, putty-like resin is then applied, moulded, and smoothed to the desired shape.
  3. Curing: The material is hardened with an ultraviolet light or laser. Once the resin is hard, our dentist will further trim and shape it, before polishing it to match the sheen of the rest of your tooth surface.

The result? A brighter, more uniform smile that you’ll be proud to show off!

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
