Dental implants have revolutionised the field of dentistry, offering individuals a second chance at a complete and confident smile. However, in the pursuit of dental perfection, it’s crucial to acknowledge that, like any medical procedure, risks can accompany the benefits. While the vast majority of implant procedures yield successful outcomes, understanding the potential worst-case scenarios is essential.

What’s the worst that can happen to your dental implants - Eilersen DentalThe Perils of Implant Failure

Implant failure is the foremost concern when considering potential risks. While modern techniques and materials have significantly reduced this risk, various factors can contribute to implant failure. These may include improper osseointegration, infections, implant fracture, and even the rare possibility of the implant not fusing with the jawbone.

Infection: A Silent Threat

Understanding Peri-Implantitis

Among the potential complications, infection stands out as a significant threat. Peri-implantitis, a condition similar to gum disease, can develop around dental implants, leading to bone loss and implant failure. This condition often presents with inflammation, bleeding, and discomfort in the surrounding tissues.

Preventive Measures: Your First Line of Defense

Practicing excellent oral hygiene is crucial to prevent infection and the development of peri-implantitis. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups can significantly reduce the risk of infection and promote the long-term success of your dental implants.

Implant Loosening: Causes and Solutions

Factors Leading to Loosening

Implant loosening can occur due to various reasons, including improper surgical technique, inadequate bone support, and lifestyle factors like smoking or teeth grinding. Recognising the signs of implant loosening early on is essential to address the issue promptly.

Addressing Implant Loosening

If implant loosening is detected, consulting a dental professional is paramount. Depending on the severity, solutions may range from adjusting the implant to more complex procedures to restore stability.

Nerve and Tissue Damage: A Rare Concern

While rare, nerve and tissue damage is a potential complication. Nerve damage can lead to numbness, tingling, or pain in the surrounding areas. Tissue damage, on the other hand, can result from improper surgical technique or trauma during the procedure.

Preventing Nerve and Tissue Complications

Choosing a skilled and experienced dental professional is the first step in reducing the risk of nerve and tissue damage. Proper planning, precise surgical techniques, and thorough assessments can mitigate these rare but serious concerns.

Allergic Reactions: Uncommon but Notable

Identifying Implant Material Allergies

Although uncommon, allergic reactions to implant materials are possible. Patients with allergies to certain metals may experience discomfort, inflammation, or even implant failure.

Minimising Allergic Reactions

Discussing potential allergies with your dentist prior to the procedure is essential. Utilising biocompatible materials and thorough allergy assessments can minimise the risk of allergic reactions.

Bone Loss and Resorption: A Long-Term Risk

Recognising Bone Loss Indicators

Over the long term, some degree of bone loss around dental implants is natural. However, excessive bone loss can compromise implant stability and aesthetics.

Strategies to Preserve Bone Health

Regular dental check-ups, maintaining oral hygiene, and possibly undergoing bone grafting procedures can help preserve bone health and extend the life of your dental implants.

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
