How Does Invisalign Work?

  • The Initial Consultation: The journey towards a straighter smile with Invisalign begins with an initial consultation. During this appointment, our dentists will assess your teeth and discuss your treatment goals. If Invisalign is deemed a suitable solution, a detailed treatment plan will be crafted to address your specific needs.
  • Creating a Customised Treatment Plan: The next step involves taking a digital scan of your teeth. This scan is used to create a 3D model of your mouth, which forms the basis of your customised treatment plan. We will use this model to map out the precise movements of your teeth and to predict the progression of your treatment at each stage.
  • Fabrication of Aligners: Once your treatment plan is finalised, it is sent to the Invisalign lab where your custom aligners are fabricated. These aligners are made from a patented thermoplastic material known as SmartTrack®, which is FDA-approved and free from BPA, BPS, latex, or gluten. The aligners are designed to apply the right amount of force in the right place at the right time to move your teeth into the desired position.
  • Wearing the Aligners: You will receive a series of aligners, each of which you’ll wear for about one to two weeks before moving on to the next in the series. The aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, and can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. This flexibility allows you to maintain your oral hygiene routine and enjoy your favourite foods without any restrictions.
  • Regular Check-ups: Throughout your treatment, you will have regular check-ups with your dental professional to monitor your progress. These appointments are typically scheduled every six to eight weeks. Adjustments to your treatment plan will be made if necessary, ensuring the best possible outcome.
  • Enjoy The Result: The duration of the treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case, but on average, it takes between 12 to 18 months. Once the treatment is complete, you will likely need to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from gradually shifting back to their original position.

Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is a fantastic solution for a variety of dental issues, such as:

  • Crowded Teeth: When there isn’t enough room in your jaw for all of your teeth to fit normally, they can bunch up, overlap and twist, sometimes getting pushed to the front or the back.
  • Overbite: This is when your upper front teeth overlap with your lower front teeth, which is typically caused by genetics, bad oral habits, or overdevelopment of the bone that supports the teeth.
  • Underbite: This occurs when you close your mouth and your lower front teeth are in front of your upper teeth. In most cases, this is caused by an overgrowth of your lower jaw.
  • Crossbite: When you close your mouth and some of your upper teeth are sitting inside your lower teeth rather than on the outside, this is known as a crossbite.
  • Gap Teeth: Gaps between teeth can occur with abnormal continued growth of the jawbone. Missing teeth can also cause the surrounding teeth to shift due to the extra space, creating gaps in your teeth.
  • Open Bite: This is when you close your mouth and there’s a noticeable space between your upper and lower teeth.
  • Generally Straighter Teeth: If you’re simply seeking a more aesthetically pleasing, straighter smile, Invisalign can help with that too!

If you would like to fix the above issues, simply book a consultation with us so that our dentists can determine if you are a suitable candidate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who might not be suitable?

While Invisalign offers many benefits, it’s not suitable for everyone. Those who might not be ideal candidates for Invisalign include:

  • Individuals who require more complex orthodontic adjustments. In some cases, traditional braces might be a better option for achieving the desired results.
  • People with existing bridgework. The aligners might not fit properly or provide the necessary pressure for tooth movement.
  • Those who need vertical tooth movement. Invisalign is less effective at moving teeth up and down compared to traditional braces.

Will Invisalign affect my speech?

When you first start wearing your Invisalign aligners, you might notice a slight effect on your speech, causing a minor lisp or a change in the pronunciation of certain words. This is because your tongue needs time to adjust to the new appliance in your mouth.

However, don’t worry! This is typically temporary and most people adjust quickly, usually within a few days to a week. Practising speaking, reading out loud, or repeating tricky words can help speed up this adjustment period.

Invisalign aligners are customised to fit your teeth snugly. So, once you’re used to them, they should have minimal impact on your speech. If you continue to experience difficulties, don’t hesitate to consult with your dentist or orthodontist. They can provide advice and solutions personalised to your situation.

Can Invisalign treat all orthodontic issues?

Invisalign is effective in treating a wide range of orthodontic issues, including overcrowding, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. However, severe cases may require alternative orthodontic treatments. Consult with an experienced Invisalign provider to determine if it is suitable for your specific case.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

The duration of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and individual factors. On average, treatment can last anywhere from several months to a couple of years. Your Invisalign provider will provide a more accurate estimate after evaluating your specific needs.

Are Invisalign aligners comfortable to wear?

Invisalign aligners are made from a smooth, comfortable plastic material. While you may experience some initial discomfort or pressure when switching to a new set of aligners, it is generally less painful than traditional braces. The aligners are designed to fit snugly over your teeth for a comfortable and pleasant experience.

Can I eat and drink with Invisalign aligners?

It is recommended to remove your Invisalign aligners when eating or drinking anything other than water. This allows you to enjoy your favorite foods without any restrictions. After eating, make sure to brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners to maintain good oral hygiene.

How do I care for my Invisalign aligners?

To keep your Invisalign aligners clean and clear, it is important to rinse them with lukewarm water and gently brush them with a toothbrush. Avoid using hot water or toothpaste, as they can damage the aligners. Additionally, make sure to store your aligners in their provided case when not in use.

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
