Experiencing swelling and tenderness in the gums can be quite uncomfortable, and it’s important to understand what might be causing these symptoms. Could a root canal be the solution? Let’s explore this further.

Swelling and Tenderness in the GumsWhat Causes Swelling and Tenderness in the Gums?

Swelling and tenderness in the gums can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of gum disease, caused by the buildup of plaque at the gumline. If not removed through daily brushing and flossing, plaque can produce toxins that irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis.
  • Periodontitis: If gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to periodontitis, where the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form pockets. These small spaces between teeth and gums can collect debris and can become infected.
  • Tooth abscess: This is a pocket of pus that’s caused by a bacterial infection, often in the root of the tooth.
  • Improper brushing or flossing techniques: If you brush or floss too hard, you can cause your gums to become irritated and swollen.
  • Hormonal changes: Changes in hormone levels, such as during pregnancy or menstruation, can make your gums more sensitive and more likely to become swollen and tender.

Can a Root Canal Help?

A root canal is a dental procedure that involves removing the inflamed or infected pulp inside your tooth, cleaning and shaping the inside of the root canal, then filling and sealing the space. This procedure is typically performed to save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected.

If your gum swelling and tenderness is due to a tooth abscess that has reached the pulp of your tooth, a root canal may indeed help. By removing the source of the infection and sealing the tooth, a root canal can alleviate the symptoms.

However, a root canal is a significant procedure and is not the first line of treatment for gum swelling and tenderness. Less invasive treatments are usually tried first, such as improving your oral hygiene routine, having a professional dental cleaning, or using a medicated mouthwash. If gum disease is the cause, treatments like scaling and root planing may be recommended.

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
