Have you ever wondered why tooth decay occurs and how it can be treated? In this article, we will delve into the reasons behind tooth decay and shed light on how it can be effectively addressed.

Exploring Tooth Decay Causes and TreatmentsThe Causes of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay occurs when harmful bacteria in the mouth produce acids that erode the protective layer of the teeth, known as enamel. Poor oral hygiene, excessive consumption of sugary and acidic foods, and infrequent dental visits contribute to the development of tooth decay. It’s crucial to be aware of these causes and take preventive measures to maintain optimal dental health.

Treatment Options

When it comes to treating tooth decay, early detection is key. Regular dental check-ups enable dentists to identify and address decay at its initial stages. Here are some common treatment options:

  1. Fillings: If the decay is limited to a small area, a filling can be used to restore the tooth. The decayed portion is removed, and the cavity is filled with a customised material such as composite resin or dental amalgam.
  2. Crowns: When a significant portion of the tooth is affected, a dental crown may be recommended. Crowns are custom-made caps that cover the damaged tooth, providing strength, protection, and aesthetic appeal.
  3. Root Canal Treatment: If the decay reaches the pulp of the tooth, root canal treatment may be necessary. During this procedure, the infected or inflamed pulp is removed, and the canal is cleaned and sealed. A crown is usually placed on the tooth to restore its appearance and functionality.
  4. Extraction: In cases where the tooth is extensively damaged and cannot be saved, extraction may be the only option. After extraction, replacement options such as dental implants or dentures can be considered to restore the missing tooth.

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
