If you’ve noticed one of your teeth darkening, you might be feeling a bit concerned. A darkened tooth can be a sign of various dental issues, and it’s essential to understand what might be causing it. Could a root canal be the solution?

Why Is My Tooth DarkeningWhat Causes a Tooth to Darken?

Teeth can darken for several reasons, including:

  • Tooth decay: This is the destruction of your tooth’s hard, outer layer (enamel) caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria.
  • Trauma: If a tooth has been hit or knocked, the nerve can be damaged, leading to a darkening of the tooth.
  • Ageing: Over time, our teeth can naturally darken as the enamel thins and the yellowish dentin beneath becomes more visible.
  • Staining: Certain foods, drinks (like coffee, tea, and red wine), and tobacco can stain teeth.
  • Internal tooth issues: Sometimes, the pulp inside the tooth can become infected or die, causing the tooth to darken.

Can a Root Canal Help?

A root canal is a dental procedure that involves removing the inflamed or infected pulp inside your tooth, cleaning and shaping the inside of the root canal, then filling and sealing the space. This procedure is typically performed to save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected.

If your tooth is darkening due to an infection or dead pulp inside the tooth, a root canal may indeed help. By removing the source of the problem and sealing the tooth, a root canal can prevent further darkening. However, it’s important to note that a root canal won’t reverse the darkening that has already occurred. In such cases, your dentist may recommend additional treatments, such as teeth whitening or a dental crown, to improve the tooth’s appearance.

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
