Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental procedure that can effectively remove certain types of stains and discoloration, giving you a brighter and more attractive smile. Understanding the types of stains that can be treated with teeth whitening can help you determine if this procedure is right for you. Let’s explore common stains that can be removed with teeth whitening.

Here are the 5 common stains that can be removed with teeth whitening:

1. Surface Stains

Surface stains, also known as extrinsic stains, are caused by external factors and typically affect the outer layer of the tooth, known as enamel. These stains are often caused by consuming pigmented foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, or by habits like smoking. Surface stains respond well to teeth whitening treatments, as the whitening agents in the procedure penetrate the enamel and break down the pigmented molecules, effectively lightening the stains.

2. Age-Related Stains

As we age, our teeth naturally undergo changes in colour and texture. Over time, the enamel becomes thinner, revealing the yellowish dentin layer beneath. This can result in teeth appearing dull or discoloured. Teeth whitening can help address age-related stains by lightening the overall shade of the teeth, restoring a more youthful and vibrant appearance.

3. Mild to Moderate Discolouration

Teeth whitening is an effective treatment for mild to moderate tooth discolouration. This type of discolouration can occur due to a variety of factors, including genetics, certain medications, or dental conditions. Teeth whitening treatments can significantly reduce the appearance of discolouration and restore a whiter and more uniform colour to the teeth.

4. Stains from Certain Foods and Beverages

Certain foods and beverages can cause stains that penetrate the enamel and affect the underlying dentin. Examples include berries, tomato-based sauces, soy sauce, and dark-coloured condiments. Teeth whitening can help diminish these stains, brightening the teeth and minimising their visibility.

5. Stains from Some Medications

Certain medications, such as tetracycline or certain antihistamines, can cause tooth discolouration when taken during tooth development or for extended periods. These stains, known as intrinsic stains, are located deep within the tooth structure. While they can be more challenging to treat, our professional teeth whitening may still be effective in reducing their visibility to some extent.

Who Are Not Suitable for Teeth Whitening?

There are certain cases where it may not be suitable or advisable:

Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is generally recommended to avoid teeth whitening treatments. The effects of whitening agents on the developing fetus or breastfeeding infant are not well understood. As a precautionary measure, it is advisable to postpone teeth whitening until after pregnancy and the breastfeeding period.

Individuals with Tooth Sensitivity or Allergies

People who already experience significant tooth sensitivity or have a history of allergic reactions to dental products may not be suitable candidates for teeth whitening. The bleaching agents used in whitening treatments can sometimes exacerbate tooth sensitivity or cause allergic reactions. It is important to discuss any existing tooth sensitivity or allergies with our dentist before undergoing teeth whitening.

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
