What are Tooth Coloured Fillings?

Tooth coloured fillings, also known as white fillings, are dental fillings that match the natural colour of your teeth. They are used to fill cavities caused by tooth decay, restoring the function and appearance of the tooth.

There are two main types of tooth coloured fillings:

  • Composite resin fillings: These are made from a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles. They are placed directly into the cavity and shaped to fit the tooth.
  • Porcelain inlays/onlays: These are custom-made in a dental laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. They are durable and resistant to staining.

Why Choose Tooth Coloured Fillings?

Choosing tooth coloured fillings offers several advantages:

  • Aesthetic appeal: Tooth coloured fillings blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, providing a more natural-looking smile.
  • Preservation of tooth structure: Unlike amalgam fillings, tooth coloured fillings require less removal of the tooth structure, preserving more of your natural tooth.
  • Durability: Modern materials used for tooth coloured fillings are strong and long-lasting, making them a reliable choice for restoring decayed teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for white fillings to turn black?

White fillings can sometimes develop discolouration over time due to staining from food and beverages, wear and tear, and the natural aging of the filling material. It is important to practice good oral hygiene, limit the consumption of staining substances, and maintain regular dental check-ups to minimise the risk of discolouration. If you notice any discolouration, consult with our dentist for an evaluation and appropriate steps to restore the natural appearance of the filling. Regular dental visits are essential for early detection and intervention.

How long does it take to get a tooth-coloured filling?

The time required for a tooth-coloured filling can vary depending on the size and location of the cavity. In general, the procedure can be completed in a single dental visit, lasting approximately 30 minutes to an hour.

Are tooth-coloured fillings as durable as silver amalgam fillings?

While tooth-coloured fillings may not be as resistant to wear and tear as silver amalgam fillings, they offer sufficient durability and strength for most cases. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, they can last for many years.

Are tooth-coloured fillings safe?

Yes, tooth-coloured fillings are considered safe. They are made from biocompatible materials and have been widely used in dentistry for many years with excellent results.

Can tooth-coloured fillings be used on back teeth?

Yes, tooth-coloured fillings can be used on both front and back teeth. They are particularly suitable for small to moderate-sized cavities and areas of tooth decay.

Do tooth-coloured fillings stain over time?

Tooth-coloured fillings can experience slight staining over time, especially if exposed to highly pigmented substances like coffee, tea, or tobacco. However, regular dental cleanings and maintaining good oral hygiene can help minimize staining and keep the fillings looking their best.

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
