White fillings, also known as composite fillings, are a popular choice for dental restorations due to their natural appearance and ability to blend with the surrounding teeth. Patients may occasionally notice a change in the colour of their white fillings over time, leading to concerns about whether it is normal for them to turn black. Let’s explore the reasons behind this discolouration and whether it is a common occurrence.

  • White fillings are made of a composite resin material that is matched to the natural shade of the teeth, providing a seamless and natural-looking restoration.
  • They are applied to the tooth in layers, hardened with a special light, and then shaped and polished to achieve an optimal aesthetic result.
  • The composite material used in white fillings is composed of a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles.

Possible Causes of Discoloration

  1. Staining
    • Over time, white fillings can develop stains due to various factors such as food and beverage consumption, tobacco use, and poor oral hygiene.
    • Dark-coloured substances like coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco can leave pigments on the surface of the filling, causing it to appear discoloured.
    • Plaque accumulation and inadequate brushing and flossing can also contribute to the formation of stains on the filling.
  2. Wear and Tear
    • White fillings may experience wear and tear over time, especially if they are subjected to excessive forces from chewing or grinding.
    • As the filling material wears down, it can create rough or porous areas that are more susceptible to staining.
  3. Ageing of the Filling Material
    • Like any dental material, composite resin used in white fillings can undergo natural aging processes.
    • Over time, the material may undergo slight changes in its physical properties, which could affect its colour stability.

Addressing Discoloured Fillings

  • If you notice that your white fillings have become discoloured or appear black, it is important to consult with your dentist for an evaluation.
  • Your dentist will examine the filling and determine the cause of the discolouration.
  • Based on the findings, appropriate steps can be taken to address the issue and restore the natural appearance of the filling.

Preventing Discoloration

  • While some discolouration of white fillings may be inevitable over time, there are preventive measures you can take to minimise the risk:
  • Practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily to remove plaque and food particles.
  • Limit the consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco.
  • Maintain regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings to ensure proper oral hygiene and address any early signs of staining or discolouration.
  • Consider using a straw when consuming beverages that may stain teeth to minimise contact with the filling.

Great dentist and hygienist, however the waiting room had no wifi (and no signal) which meant I couldn’t work when waiting. When I asked if there was wifi, I was just told ‘no’ by the receptionist. I was going to add a suggestion to the box, but there was no pen.

I have attended this practice for many years and I never fail to be impressed by the quality of the work carried out by both the dentists and the dental hygienists. Procedures are explained clearly and in such a friendly manner. And most importantly despite having some major work carried out on a few occasions I did not feel any pain during, or after, the treatment. I would also like to pont out that the reception staff are so efficient, friendly and most helpful. This is an outstanding dental practice.
